Mentor Text Analysis #2

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

Tori Truscheit is a femme queer parent who freelance writes. Her descriptive article, "When You’re Trans, Living With Your Parents Can Be Complicated," focuses on the individual struggles that many trans people experience (especially within their family), starting from coming out to their transition. Most trans people have to settle for less and risk damaging their mental health in order to live out their day-to-day lives. Although Truscheit's text is for other trans people, it also enables non-trans readers to be more empathetic and understanding especially since a lot of individuals are unaware that many trans people end up homeless. Imagine not being able to live at your home just because you aren't accepted or loved for who you are. Her text reminds me of a prevalent issue relating to the LGBTQ+ community. The "Don't say gay" bill that would ban the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in primary schools recently passed in the Florida Senate Education Committee. The LGBT community is constantly being discriminated against. But it's people like Tori Truscheit who raise awareness of that discrimination, that are going to help people (specifically trans in this text) feel more accepted when they're missing that feeling in other aspects of their lives.
